- Lighting the Way Forward: Expanding Soccer Access at Nashville Fútbol Club
One of our biggest challenges as a club is field access — especially fields with lights. As daylight hours shrink, it gets harder to find consistent, affordable training space in our area. That limits opportunities for our players. We’ve been fortunate to build relationships with facilities that have lights, which has helped us continue training — but we’re quickly outgrowing those options . Mobile lights will allow us to expand into new fields closer to where our players live and train, while keeping costs manageable for families. We’re raising $20,000 to purchase mobile lights. These lights will immediately expand our access to fields closer to our players’ neighborhoods — and help us keep training costs down for families. With the World Cup on the horizon and changes to the U.S. Soccer age model coming soon, we’re expecting even more growth in the coming seasons. Mobile lighting gives us the flexibility to meet that demand and continue delivering high-quality training to every player who wants to be part of the game. Your support goes further than lighting. This spring, we awarded $20,000 in player scholarships — and we want to do even more. Every dollar beyond our $20K goal will go directly back into scholarships to ensure that cost is never a barrier to play and all players have soccer access. ⚽ More soccer access. More players. More soccer. Help us reach our goal and light the way forward. All donations are fully tax-deductible.
- The 1% Edge: How Small Gains Drive Big Player Development at NFC
Success in soccer isn’t about one big moment — it’s built on the small ones. Discover how Nashville FC’s “1% Better” approach is transforming player development, one habit at a time. Written by: Jason Roufs, NFC DOC When people ask how athletes reach the top, they often imagine one magic secret; a perfect drill, a natural talent, or a sudden breakthrough. The truth is far less glamorous, but far more powerful. I think often of Sir Dave Brailsford and the British Cycling program. In the early 2000s, British cyclists were irrelevant on the world stage. They hadn’t won the Tour de France, they weren’t competing for Olympic medals, and their program was mocked. Then Brailsford came in with a simple idea: the aggregation of marginal gains. If they could improve every detail by just 1% — bike seat comfort, hand-washing to prevent colds, pillow choice for better sleep, training recovery, nutrition habits, then those tiny gains would stack up. Within a decade, Britain dominated cycling. They won 16 Olympic gold medals between 2008 and 2012 , and riders like Chris Froome, Bradley Wiggins, and Geraint Thomas went on to win the Tour de France multiple times. As Brailsford said: “The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.” That lesson applies directly to soccer — especially in youth development. What 1% Looks Like in Soccer As a player who’s competed at high levels, I know the difference between an average player and a great one is rarely a giant leap. It’s usually dozens of small habits, repeated daily. At NFC, we talk often about Player Development First – Shaping Players, Not Scorelines. The 1% philosophy is what this looks like in practice: Technical skills: 5 extra minutes a day juggling the ball adds up to 30 hours of touches over a year. That’s not 1% — that’s transformational. Weak foot training: Passing 20 balls a day with your weaker foot equals over 7,000 passes in a year. Conditioning: Choosing to hydrate well instead of soda means you recover faster and lower injury risk. Tactical awareness: Watching 10 minutes of a professional match, focused on off-ball movement, builds soccer IQ far faster than simply playing more games. Character habits: Writing down one goal each week creates accountability, something studies show increases follow-through by over 40%. None of these feel big in the moment. But compounded? They change a player. Why It Matters More Than Results Too many people measure growth by the weekend scoreboard. I’ve been around this game long enough to know the truth: wins and losses fade. What lasts is how much a player develops. That’s why NFC is focused on benchmarks that reflect growth — first touch, passing consistency, movement off the ball, decision-making, resilience. These can all be improved in small, steady ways. Research backs this up. In James Clear’s Atomic Habits , he writes: “If you get 1% better each day for one year, you’ll end up 37 times better by the time you’re done.” Imagine if every NFC player embraced that. Imagine a 12-year-old who simply got 1% better every day in juggling, receiving, passing, and character. By the time they’re 18, they’re not just a better player — they’re a better leader, teammate, and person. Practical 1% Gains for NFC Player Development Here’s how you can apply this philosophy starting today: Arrive 5 minutes earlier to every practice and get in touches before warm-up. After training, pick one skill you struggled with and repeat it 20 more times before leaving. At home, set aside just 10 minutes for juggling, dribbling in the yard, or wall passes. Keep a water bottle with you and build the habit of hydrating daily. Write down one goal each week — whether it’s “10 juggles with my weak foot” or “encourage a teammate every session.” Bringing It All Together As a player, I know what it takes to reach higher levels and it’s not magic. It’s the 1%. As a coach, I see every day how those who commit to the little things separate themselves from those who only show up for the games. At NFC, we’re not just building teams. Teams come and go. Players graduate. But if each player leaves us 37 times better than when they arrived, then we’ve done our job. So my challenge to every NFC player and family is this: stop asking, “Did we win this weekend?” Start asking, “Where did I grow 1% this week?” If we keep that perspective, we’ll not only develop better soccer players we’ll develop stronger young men and women prepared for life.
- Player Development First – Shaping Players, Not Scorelines
Written by: Jason Roufs, NFC DOC At Nashville Fútbol Club, our mission is clear: Player Development First – Shaping Players, Not Scorelines. It’s easy to measure a season by wins and losses. But the truth is, no youth team will ever stay together forever. Players will move on after a year, a few seasons, or at graduation. What lasts beyond the scoreboard is the growth of each individual player — technically, mentally, emotionally, and as a person. Why Player Development Over Scorelines? Research in youth sports consistently shows that players who focus on skill development, effort, and improvement are more likely to: Stay in the game longer. Build resilience through challenges. Reach higher levels of performance over time. For example, a study from the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology found that young athletes who were praised for effort and growth, rather than wins, showed greater long-term motivation and confidence. Similarly, FIFA’s youth development guidelines emphasize that small-sided games and developmental benchmarks — not short-term results — are the key to producing world-class players. Decision-making under pressure: In moments like this, Nashville FC players learn to combine timing, technique, and grit — key traits in long-term player development. What Does Progress Look Like? Progress is not only measured by the scoreboard. Instead, we want parents, players, and coaches to ask: Is my child improving their first touch, passing, and receiving? Are they scanning more often, making quicker and smarter decisions? Do they show resilience; bouncing back from mistakes and staying engaged? Are they learning leadership, teamwork, and responsibility? Do they love the game more today than they did last season? These are the true markers of success. How Parents Can Support Development Parents play a huge role in shaping how players see their progress. Here are a few ways to encourage development-first thinking: Ask better questions after games. Instead of “Did you win?”, try: “What’s one thing you did better today than last week?” “What did you learn from that game?” “How did you help your team?” Celebrate effort and growth. Praise moments of composure, creativity, teamwork, or risk-taking — not just goals scored. Use development language. Talk about “progress,” “growth,” and “learning moments” instead of wins and losses. How Players Can See Their Growth For players, we encourage you to look beyond the scoreboard: Track your juggling record, sprint time, or weak-foot passes. Notice if you’re reading the game faster and making smarter choices. Reflect on your resilience — do you bounce back quicker after mistakes? Remember: improvement happens in small steps, not just big moments. The Bigger Picture When we say Player Development First – Shaping Players, Not Scorelines , it means we are committed to preparing every player for the next step — whether that’s the next age group, high school, college, or simply a lifelong love of the game. Winning feels good, but true success is seeing players leave Nashville FC with stronger skills, character, and confidence than when they arrived. That is what defines us as a club. Together, let’s speak and see progress differently.Celebrate development. Support growth. Shape players, not scorelines.
- Rethinking Stats: Measuring What Really Matters in Player Development
Written by: Jason Roufs, NFC DOC At Nashville FC, we’ve taken another step in living out our philosophy: “Player Development First – Shaping Players, Not Scorelines.” Traditional game statistics — goals, assists, tackles, saves — only capture a small part of what happens in a match. More importantly, they tend to reward the few players directly involved in scoring moments, while missing the growth of many others whose progress may not show up on a scoresheet. Development in motion: This moment doesn’t show up on a scoresheet, but it reflects scanning, spacing, and decision-making — the habits that truly measure progress. Why Traditional Stats Fall Short Sports research confirms this: in youth soccer, early “game stats” often skew toward the most physically mature players, not necessarily the most skilled or intelligent players (Côté & Vierimaa, 2014). That means the players who score or tackle most at age 10–14 aren’t always the ones who develop into the strongest long-term players. FIFA’s youth development guidelines also emphasize that developmental benchmarks matter more than results — because players who learn technical mastery, game intelligence, and resilience in their youth are the ones who thrive at higher levels. The NFC Player Development Benchmark Tracker This season, coaches and parents will be tracking new performance categories that measure true growth. Instead of just goals and assists, we’ll be looking at things like: 🟡 Technical Execution Using the non-dominant foot Dribbling out of pressure First touch under pressure 🟡 Tactical Involvement Movement to create space Tracking back after losing possession Supporting the attack 🟡 Character & Mentality Positive communication Composure under pressure Encouraging teammates These benchmarks connect directly to our training philosophy and help us see how well players are applying what they learn in practice to real matches. How Parents and Fans Can Support To make this work, we’re not only asking coaches to track these benchmarks — we’re also inviting parents to be part of the process . Roles in Benchmark Tracking: Coach Role: Set focus areas and guide what should be observed each week. Parent Role: Rotate as “stat trackers” during games, marking benchmarks for players. Why It Matters: Coaches can stay focused on in-game adjustments Parents learn to see development, not just outcomes By participating, parents start to appreciate the awareness, decision-making, and habits that define a player’s growth. Shifting the Conversation: Questions That Matter We also encourage parents and fans to shift how they talk about games.Instead of asking: “Did you score?” or “Did you win?” Try asking: “Did you use your non-dominant foot today?” “How often did you check your shoulder before receiving the ball?” “Did you encourage a teammate when things got tough?” “What was one way you created space for your team?” By focusing on these types of questions, we reinforce that every player — not just goal-scorers — can succeed and be recognized for their growth. Building Soccer IQ Together When coaches, parents, and players share the same developmental lens , we create an environment where: Players understand that progress > results Parents celebrate effort and habits Fans grow their own soccer IQ , learning to see the game through development, not just scorelines This isn’t just about better stats. It ’s about reshaping the culture of youth soccer at Nashville FC to celebrate growth, learning, and love for the game. Together, let’s celebrate progress in every player. Because shaping players, not scorelines, is how we build strong athletes, confident leaders, and lifelong lovers of the game.
- NFC Coaching Philosophy: The Four Pillars of Player Development
At Nashville FC, our philosophy is simple: the game of soccer is built on a strong foundation of fundamentals. To become a complete player, we believe athletes must first master the essentials before layering on the additional demands of the game. Our coaching model is built around Four Pillars of Player Developmental that guide how we train, evaluate, and grow players. Built on the fundamentals: Nashville FC players growing together through a development-first approach rooted in dribbling, passing, receiving, and physical performance. 1. Dribbling Dribbling is the heartbeat of the game. From the youngest ages, we emphasize control, creativity, and confidence on the ball. Every player should be comfortable carrying the ball in tight spaces, escaping pressure, and driving forward with purpose. 🔹 Focus Areas by Stage: U9–U12: Ball mastery, change of direction, 1v1 confidence U13+: Applying dribbling to break lines, open space, and create goal-scoring chances 2. Passing The game moves faster when the ball moves faster. Passing is the foundation of teamwork and intelligent play. We teach precision, timing, and the vision to connect short combinations and long-range distribution. 🔹 Focus Areas by Stage: U9–U12: Short, accurate passes with both feet; understanding how to work with teammates U13+: Expanding passing range, playing under pressure, breaking defensive lines, creative use of ball distribution 3. Receiving First touch dictates everything. Receiving skills turn good players into great ones by giving them control and confidence in any situation. We stress using all surfaces of the body to receive cleanly and prepare the next action. We often say: "The purpose of receiving the ball is to set yourself up." That means players must receive the ball in a way that makes their next step efficient and effective . 🔹 Focus Areas by Stage: U9–U12: First touch into space, receiving on the move, adjusting body shape U13+: Receiving under pressure, directional first touch, disguising intent 4. Physical Performance (Introduced at Select Level – U13+) As players grow into the Select program, they face the full demands of the modern game. A complete player must not only think and play quickly — but also sustain physical performance . Physical Performance includes stamina, strength, speed, agility, and recovery. It ensures players can meet the game’s demands across a season while minimizing injuries. 🔹 Focus Areas by Stage: U13–U15: Building aerobic fitness, agility, and injury prevention habits U16–U19: Developing anaerobic capacity, explosive speed, match stamina (5–7 miles per game), and recovery routines College/Elite: Peak conditioning, strength for duels, and resilience to sustain high-level competition Progression of Development Our model is designed with a clear progression through age groups: ⚽ Academy (U9–U12): Core Technical Mastery Focus on: Dribbling Passing Receiving Players develop confidence on the ball, love for the game, and soccer IQ through small-sided play and position-specific training. ⚽ Select (U13–U18): Complete Player Development Building on technical mastery while adding: Tactical understanding Physical performance Mental and emotional resilience Players prepare for higher-level competition with increased intensity and speed of play. The Goal of our Pillars of Player Development By following these Four Pillars , Nashville FC prepares players not only to compete at higher levels of soccer, but also to carry life-long lessons in: Discipline Teamwork Resilience Our players develop a love for the game , an ability to think independently , and the technical and physical foundation to succeed — wherever the game takes them.

- What I Wish I'd Known About Soccer Tryouts: A Parent's Guide
Discover the inside scoop on youth soccer clubs and tryouts from a Nashville FC parent-turned-administrator. Learn how club culture, tryout politics, and hidden expectations can impact your child’s soccer journey—and get the honest, practical advice every parent deserves. What I Wish I'd Known About Soccer Tryouts When my oldest son first ventured into the world of travel soccer, I felt like I'd stumbled into a complex maze filled with hidden agendas and unspoken rules. Years later, having navigated the inner workings as an administrator at Nashville Fútbol Club, I've seen firsthand the politics and gatekeeping that often overshadow youth soccer. Before we started our club, I was just another parent looking for the best environment for my son and his friends, who had clearly outgrown recreational leagues. Our club was created specifically to address these common parental concerns and to provide families with transparent, practical guidance. Consider this blog a long-overdue playbook, intended to demystify soccer clubs and soccer tryouts and empower parents with the knowledge to navigate them confidently. Here are some honest insights I wish I'd known when my family was exploring club soccer: There's No Such Thing as the "Perfect" Club Every soccer club has its strengths, flaws, and unique quirks. Choosing the right fit for your family is nuanced—much more than simply following the biggest name or the flashiest brand. A big name doesn't always equate to the best experience for your child. If your child has skill and commitment, the right opportunities and pathways will naturally open up, regardless of club size or prestige. Talent and determination speak louder than the club’s reputation. Admittedly, there's an obvious bias here—you're reading this on our website, after all. Nashville Fútbol Club isn't perfect, nor are we pretending we're the perfect match for every family. We're a midsized club that's upfront about who we are and who we aren't. What we can promise is transparency and an honest approach, helping you make the best decision for your family's soccer journey. I would strongly recommend each family honestly assess their goals entering the club soccer experience. Find a club that nurtures and supports these goals—it makes all the difference in your child's development and enjoyment of the game. Winning Isn’t Everything—Development Is Especially at younger levels, an excessive emphasis on winning can seriously stunt a player's long-term development. Clubs are often incentivized to prioritize victories because wins serve as marketing points, creating the illusion that they offer the best environment. But short-term success, like placing the fastest kid at striker or the tallest kid in goal, does little to foster genuine growth or skill mastery. When physical advantages diminish as peers catch up, these players may struggle to adapt. I encourage you to keep a long-term view of your child's development—both as a soccer player and as a person—and select a club dedicated to nurturing and advancing that vision. Beware of Mandatory Multi-Day Tryouts Almost all clubs hold tryouts the same weeks. This is not their fault but a flaw in the club soccer calendar which turns tryouts into a chaotic free-for-all. Be cautious about clubs that require attendance at multiple days to qualify for selection. While observing a player multiple times can offer additional insights, mandating attendance every day can place undue pressure on families and limit their options, especially since club tryouts overlap. Often, this serves more as a tactic to pressure early commitment rather than genuinely benefiting the evaluation of players. Avoid the Pressure to Commit Immediately Some clubs pressure families to commit within 48 hours of an offer. While clubs understandably want to secure their rosters quickly, such urgency typically benefits them far more than it does families. Official state signing dates usually occur weeks after tryouts, so immediate commitments aren’t genuinely binding. If you feel rushed, ask for more time. A club worth joining respects your need to make a thoughtful decision. Remember, your family deserves clarity and space to choose wisely without undue pressure or artificial deadlines. Boys and Girls Are Different—Development Should Reflect That Boys and girls are unique. Good clubs recognize these differences and adjust their coaching methods, communication styles, and team dynamics accordingly. Girls might respond better to collaborative approaches emphasizing team cohesion and mutual support, while boys might thrive under competitive environments with clear individual challenges. Look for clubs that thoughtfully address these distinctions rather than applying a generic, one-size-fits-all approach. The best clubs understand and respect these differences, fostering an inclusive yet specialized developmental experience. Soccer Tryouts Show Clubs on Their Best Behavior—Attend a Practice or Game if Possible Tryouts represent clubs at their polished best—think of it as the club’s highlight reel. Everyone, including coaches and administrators, tends to behave differently when they know they're under scrutiny. To truly grasp a club’s authentic culture, request to observe or attend a regular practice session or even a game. This offers a clearer, unfiltered perspective on coaching styles, player-coach interactions, communication methods, and overall team atmosphere. Witnessing day-to-day operations gives invaluable insights that polished tryout sessions simply cannot. Clearly Understand the Costs and Commitment Travel soccer can involve hidden costs beyond registration fees, including uniforms, travel expenses, tournament fees, and even additional training or coaching fees. Before committing, thoroughly understand the full scope of the financial and time investments required. Transparent clubs will openly discuss these aspects upfront, allowing you to budget and plan effectively. Asking direct questions about fees, schedules, and obligations will help avoid unpleasant surprises down the line and ensure the club’s expectations align with your family’s capacities. My goal isn't to steer you toward Nashville Fútbol Club specifically—it's to help you confidently navigate the complex world of youth soccer. Remember, as I mentioned at the outset, the right club for your child depends entirely on your family's unique needs and priorities. We're not naive enough to think we're the perfect fit for everyone. But we are genuinely committed to empowering you with the knowledge and transparency needed to make the best possible decision, whether that means joining us or finding another great club in the Nashville area. If you have questions about our process, or club soccer in general, please reach out—we're here to support your family's journey.

- What Happens After Soccer Tryouts? A Quick Guide for Families
Tryout season can be a whirlwind—schedules to juggle, clubs to compare, decisions to make. At Nashville Fútbol Club (NFC), we want to help make the process as clear and stress-free as possible. Whether your player joins us or not, we’re here to support your family’s journey. Focused and fearless — young NFC players putting their training into action during a spring match. Developing skills, building confidence, and loving the game. Who Can Try Out? We welcome players born between 2008 and 2017 —and we’re committed to helping every player grow, no matter where they’re starting from. Here's how our pathway is structured: U9–U10 Pre-Academy (Birth Years 2017–2016) Tryouts at this stage are more about expressing interest than earning a spot. We typically accept all players because: “It's impossible to predict future success at these ages — our goal is to build a strong foundation and a love for the game.” Focus on fun, fundamentals, and learning the game Intro to team play and field spacing Games are played in a 7v7 format Note: U8 players are welcome to try out for U9 teams, but we generally encourage starting with a recreational program. We don’t currently form designated U8 teams. U11 Pre-Academy (Birth Year 2015) This is where players begin to build more tactical awareness. Emphasis on team concepts and game understanding Supportive coaching with plenty of room to grow Matches shift to the 9v9 format U12 Academy (Birth Year 2014) A transitional year where team placements may become more selective based on numbers and development. Increased focus on roles and positioning Tactical coaching and team strategy 9v9 game format continues U13–U19 Academy (Birth Years 2013–2008) These players compete at a higher level with more structure and challenge. Competitive team environments Greater focus on performance, leadership, and team dynamics Matches are typically played 11v11 NFC Soccer Tryout Schedule U9–U12 (2014–2017) Boys & Girls 📍 Smithson Craighead Academy – 730 Neelys Bend Rd, Madison, TN 37115 🗓️ May 13 & 15 🕠 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM 🌧️ Rainout/Supplemental: May 20 U13–U18 (2008–2013) Boys & Girls 📍 Madison Academy – 100 Academy Rd, Madison, TN 37115 🗓️ May 27 & 28 🕠 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM 🌧️ Rainout/Supplemental: June 3 We’d love to see your player at both tryout dates—but if you can only make one, that’s perfectly fine. Just let us know so we can evaluate your player appropriately. Important TSSA Dates to Know TSSA sets statewide tryout guidelines to ensure fairness across all clubs: May 12, 2025 – First day for soccer tryouts for 12U and younger May 26, 2025 – No tryouts allowed (Memorial Day) May 27, 2025 – First day for tryouts for 13U and older June 16, 2025 – Binding Date : Players officially commit to a club on this date (as long as financial obligations are met) Reminder: Clubs that violate these dates risk TSSA membership and event eligibility. NFC follows these rules because families deserve a fair process. What Happens After Tryouts? If your player is selected for a team, you’ll receive a prompt offer with all the details. We’ll give you space to decide, but we’re here to answer questions along the way. Anyone pressuring you to make a decision within 24–48 hours is doing so on behalf of their club , not the state. The TSSA binding date is June 16 , not the day after tryouts. That said, if you know your decision earlier, please let us know—it helps us finalize rosters and ensure we have the right number of players and coaches in place. No Pressure. Just Support. At NFC, we don’t believe in hard sells or rushed decisions. We’ve seen the damage pressure can do, and frankly, everyone loses when families feel forced. We want what’s best for your child—even if that means joining a different club. We’re here to serve families, not just sign players. We’re Here for Families—On and Off the Field We’re proud of what we offer at Nashville Fútbol Club. But more than anything, we’re proud to be part of a soccer community that supports young athletes and the people who cheer them on. We hope to see you at tryouts—and whether you join us or not, we’re in your corner.
