  • What Happens After Soccer Tryouts? A Quick Guide for Families

Tryout season can be a whirlwind—schedules to juggle, clubs to compare, decisions to make. At Nashville Fútbol Club (NFC), we want to help make the process as clear and stress-free as possible. Whether your player joins us or not, we’re here to support your family’s  journey. Focused and fearless — young NFC players putting their training into action during a spring match. Developing skills, building confidence, and loving the game. Who Can Try Out? We welcome players born between 2008 and 2017 —and we’re committed to helping every player grow, no matter where they’re starting from. Here's how our pathway is structured: U9–U10 Pre-Academy (Birth Years 2017–2016) Tryouts at this stage are more about expressing interest than earning a spot. We typically accept all players because: “It's impossible to predict future success at these ages — our goal is to build a strong foundation and a love for the game.” Focus on fun, fundamentals, and learning the game Intro to team play and field spacing Games are played in a 7v7 format Note: U8 players are welcome to try out for U9 teams, but we generally encourage starting with a recreational program. We don’t currently form designated U8 teams. U11 Pre-Academy (Birth Year 2015) This is where players begin to build more tactical awareness. Emphasis on team concepts and game understanding Supportive coaching with plenty of room to grow Matches shift to the 9v9 format U12 Academy (Birth Year 2014) A transitional year where team placements may become more selective based on numbers and development. Increased focus on roles and positioning Tactical coaching and team strategy 9v9 game format continues U13–U19 Academy (Birth Years 2013–2008) These players compete at a higher level with more structure and challenge. Competitive team environments Greater focus on performance, leadership, and team dynamics Matches are typically played 11v11 NFC Soccer Tryout Schedule U9–U12 (2014–2017) Boys & Girls 📍 Smithson Craighead Academy – 730 Neelys Bend Rd, Madison, TN 37115 🗓️ May 13 & 15 🕠 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM 🌧️ Rainout/Supplemental: May 20 U13–U18 (2008–2013) Boys & Girls 📍 Madison Academy – 100 Academy Rd, Madison, TN 37115 🗓️ May 27 & 28 🕠 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM 🌧️ Rainout/Supplemental: June 3 We’d love to see your player at both tryout dates—but if you can only make one, that’s perfectly fine. Just let us know so we can evaluate your player appropriately. Important TSSA Dates to Know TSSA sets statewide tryout guidelines to ensure fairness across all clubs: May 12, 2025  – First day for soccer tryouts for 12U and younger May 26, 2025  – No tryouts allowed  (Memorial Day) May 27, 2025  – First day for tryouts for 13U and older June 16, 2025  – Binding Date : Players officially commit to a club on this date (as long as financial obligations are met) Reminder: Clubs that violate these dates risk TSSA membership and event eligibility. NFC follows these rules because families deserve a fair process. What Happens After Tryouts? If your player is selected for a team, you’ll receive a prompt offer with all the details. We’ll give you space to decide, but we’re here to answer questions along the way. Anyone pressuring you to make a decision within 24–48 hours is doing so on behalf of their club , not the state. The TSSA binding date is June 16 , not the day after tryouts. That said, if you know your decision earlier, please let us know—it helps us finalize rosters and ensure we have the right number of players and coaches in place. No Pressure. Just Support. At NFC, we don’t believe in hard sells or rushed decisions. We’ve seen the damage pressure can do, and frankly, everyone loses when families feel forced. We want what’s best for your child—even if that means joining a different club. We’re here to serve families, not just sign players. We’re Here for Families—On and Off the Field We’re proud of what we offer at Nashville Fútbol Club. But more than anything, we’re proud to be part of a soccer community that supports young athletes and the people who cheer them on. We hope to see you at tryouts—and whether you join us or not, we’re in your corner.

  • Cognitive Soccer Training in Nashville: NFC Partners with S2 Cognition to Boost Player Development

We have exciting news for our NFC families:  Nashville Fútbol Club is teaming up with S2 Cognition , an innovative sports-science company, to enhance how we train and develop our players. Soccer has always been more than just physical skill – it’s a mental game too. In fact, over the course of a 90-minute match, a player might make 3,000 to 6,000 split-second decisions  that impact the game. Our partnership with S2 Cognition will help us nurture the mental  side of soccer like never before, using cutting-edge tools to train your athlete’s mind along with their body. We’re thrilled to introduce this science-backed program and explain what it means for your middle or high school player. Proud to partner with S2 Cognition —the science behind the split‑second decisions that give NFC players their mental edge. Cognitive Soccer Training in Nashville – What Is S2 Cognition? S2 Cognition is a leader in cognitive soccer training in Nashville and nation wide. They’ve developed a patented 30- to 45-minute digital evaluation  that measures the brain skills athletes use on the field. Think of it as a high-tech reflex and awareness test – kind of like a video game – that zeroes in on how a player sees  the game. During this fun, computer-based assessment, S2’s system will gauge your child’s abilities in key areas of soccer intelligence, such as: Split-second decision making:  How quickly can they decide on the right play under pressure? Spatial awareness:  Can they sense where teammates, opponents, and open space are at all times? Attention and focus:  Are they able to tune out distractions and stay concentrated during the game? Reaction speed:  How fast do they process what they see and react to it on the field? These cognitive skills often distinguish great players – the ones who always seem one step ahead  – and now we have a way to actually measure them. S2’s evaluation has been used by teams at the highest levels , including Major League Soccer and top NCAA Division I programs to quantify traits that coaches used to only guess at. In short, S2 gives us a clear picture of how your player’s mind works in game situations. And knowing that means we can train smarter. We're proud to be S2 first youth soccer partner in Middle Tennessee! Tailoring Training to Your Athlete’s Unique Strengths Every soccer player is different – some kids have lightning-fast reactions, others have excellent field vision or focus. The beauty of the S2 Cognition tool is that it helps us identify your child’s cognitive strengths and areas for growth  with unprecedented precision. After an S2 evaluation, we receive a detailed report on how your athlete’s brain processes the game. This isn’t a score that ranks or labels kids as “good” or “bad” players; rather, it’s a personal roadmap showing where they excel and where they can improve. Armed with these insights, our coaches can tailor training to each player’s needs . As S2 Cognition describes it, “once you understand a player's cognitive abilities, you can tailor their training to get the most out of each session.” For example, if the evaluation shows a player has amazing spatial awareness but could improve their reaction speed, we’ll know to emphasize quick-reaction drills for that player. If another player has great focus but struggles with making split-second decisions, we can work on exercises that speed up decision-making in game-like scenarios. This individualized approach means more versatile, targeted training  for your child. We’re not replacing any of our proven coaching methods – we’re enhancing them. S2’s data adds another layer to how we develop well-rounded athletes, ensuring that practice sessions challenge each player just right, in the areas that benefit them the most. A Partnership Aligned with Our Holistic Values One of the reasons we’re so excited about this partnership is because it fits perfectly with NFC's holistic, values-driven philosophy . At NFC, we’ve always believed that soccer is more than wins and losses  – it’s about character, leadership, and growth . Our program is built on developing young people who thrive both on and off the field. We emphasize resilience, teamwork, and personal development in every practice and game. As our Club Culture statement puts it, we are “dedicated to helping each player reach their full potential, both on and off the field… Beyond mastering the tactics of soccer, your child will learn invaluable life skills, building confidence and cultivating a strong character.” Integrating S2 Cognition’s platform is another way we’re living out these values. By understanding the mental side of each athlete, we’re able to coach the whole person . We’re teaching our players not just what  to do, but how to think  – helping them become smarter players and stronger individuals. The cognitive skills S2 measures (like focus and quick decision-making) are qualities that benefit kids in school, relationships, and life. This aligns with our mission to nurture well-rounded individuals grounded in integrity and leadership. In short, S2 Cognition will help us support your child’s overall development  while still having a ton of fun playing the sport we all love. Preparing Players for Higher Levels with Science-Backed Training We know many of our athletes dream of playing at higher levels – making the varsity team, earning a college scholarship, or even reaching the pros. Our partnership with S2 Cognition is one more way we’re preparing your kids for those opportunities. This isn’t just the latest training fad; it’s a science-backed method  that top coaches are already using to gain an edge. As Florida State’s three-time national champion coach Mark Krikorian said about S2, “having the ability to see how our players process information is invaluable. This helps our players read the game quicker and play at the highest level.” In other words, the same cognitive training that helps a 15-year-old today can pay off when they’re playing in college tomorrow. By introducing your children to cognitive evaluation and training now, we’re giving them a head start. It builds confidence, too – players can tangibly see improvement in things like reaction time and attention, which often translates to better performance on game day. And when a player inevitably faces tougher competition as they move up, they’ll be mentally ready . They’ll have experience with professional-grade evaluation, and they’ll know how to adapt their game because they understand their own strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to set every NFC player up for success wherever their soccer journey leads, and S2 Cognition is an amazing tool to help us do that. Join Us in This Next Evolution – Sign Up for Tryouts! We can’t wait to start implementing S2 Cognition’s program with our teams. In the coming season, NFC players will have the opportunity to take the S2 evaluation and benefit from training adjusted to their cognitive profiles. It’s all part of our commitment to provide the best, most supportive soccer experience  for your family. If you’ve been considering NFC for your middle or high schooler, now is the perfect time to get on board. Come be a part of this next evolution in youth soccer training! Our upcoming tryouts  will be the first introduction to some of these new cognitive testing elements – and we’re confident your player will find it both challenging and fun. Remember, at NFC we develop athletes inside and out : body, mind, and character. With S2 Cognition, we’re taking that mission to the next level. Sign your player up for our upcoming tryouts  (registration is open on our website HERE ) and see firsthand how we’re combining innovative science with our heart for holistic development. We look forward to seeing you on the field and embarking on this exciting journey together. Let’s train smarter, play harder, and help your child reach their fullest potential – go NFC !

  • Choosing Between Club and Recreational Soccer: Finding the Best Fit for Your Family

Club Soccer vs. Recreational Soccer: What’s the Right Fit for Your Family? If you’re new to youth soccer, you’ve probably heard the terms recreational soccer and club soccer tossed around—and you might be wondering what the difference is. At Nashville Fútbol Club (NFC), we get this question a lot from families exploring soccer options for their kids. Both types of soccer offer fantastic opportunities, but they’re quite different in what they provide and the commitment they require. Let’s break it down so you can figure out what’s best for your child and family! Level of Play The most noticeable difference between recreational and club soccer is the level of play. Recreational Soccer : Recreational soccer is all about having fun, staying active, and enjoying the game in a laid-back environment. It’s great for newer players or those looking for a less competitive experience, focusing on teamwork and participation. Club Soccer : Club soccer is more competitive. It’s geared toward players who are eager to sharpen their skills and compete at a higher level. At NFC, we emphasize technical and tactical skill development, along with fostering team cohesion and a love for the game. Time Commitment The time you and your child can dedicate to soccer is a big consideration when choosing between recreational and club soccer. Recreational Soccer : The schedule is straightforward, usually involving one practice and one game per week. Games are typically held at the same location. Club Soccer : Club soccer does require more time. At NFC, players practice twice a week, with games on most weekends during the season. Tournaments are also part of the schedule, often featuring multiple games over a weekend. Our games and tournaments are generally spread throughout Middle Tennessee, though some may require occasional travel. Cost Cost is another important factor when deciding between recreational and club soccer. Recreational Soccer : Recreational soccer is typically cheaper, with lower fees covering essentials like uniforms and field use. Club Soccer : Club soccer costs more because it includes professional coaching, training programs, league registration fees, and expenses for tournaments. At NFC, this investment reflects the additional resources dedicated to your player’s development. Coaching Coaching plays a significant role in shaping a player’s experience on the field. Recreational Soccer : Coaches are often parent volunteers or local community members who create a supportive, fun environment. Generally speaking, they do have have technical training. Club Soccer : Coaches are professionals with advanced training and experience. At NFC, our coaches are committed to individual and team development, helping players unlock their full potential through structured, personalized coaching.  All of our head coaches have obtained licenses relevant to their position Player Development Your player’s goals and aspirations should guide your decision here. Recreational Soccer : The focus is on having fun, learning the basics, and enjoying the experience. While some skill development occurs, it’s more about participation and teamwork. Club Soccer : At NFC, our programs are designed to help players grow. Club soccer prioritizes individual skill development, tactical understanding, and preparing players for higher levels of play. Team Structure and Selection The way teams are formed differs significantly between recreational and club soccer. Recreational Soccer : Teams are typically created through league sign-ups to ensure they’re balanced and fair. Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of skill level. Club Soccer : Club teams are formed through tryouts, and players are grouped by skill level. At the Academy level, we do not cut players, but at older ages we do. Parent Involvement The role of parents can vary depending on the type of soccer. Recreational Soccer : Parents often serve as volunteer coaches, or team helpers. Club Soccer : We do have opportunities for parents to get involved, but not for all roles. While we have parent volunteer team managers and occasional assistant positions, NFC’s club teams are led by staff head coaches and our administrative team is directly involved in scheduling and management.  Insurance One key advantage of club soccer, particularly with clubs registered through Tennessee Soccer, is the inclusion of insurance for on-field injuries. Recreational soccer, while more informal, does not typically provide this coverage. This added benefit offers peace of mind for families, knowing that their players are protected during practices and games. So, What’s the Best Fit for Your Player? If your child is looking for a fun, low-pressure introduction to soccer, or just wants to stay active and play with friends, recreational soccer might be the way to go. But if they’re ready for a bigger challenge, want to grow their skills, and have goals of competing at a higher level, club soccer is likely the perfect fit. At NFC, we’re here to help you make the right choice for your family. Whether you’re exploring recreational soccer or ready to dive into the commitment of club soccer, we’re happy to answer any questions you have. Interested in learning more about club soccer with NFC? Check out our tryouts—we’d love to see you on the field.

Tournaments like this show what youth soccer in Nashville is all about—players growing their skills, learning resilience, and creating memories that last. For parents exploring youth soccer options, Nashville Fútbol Club is all about these kinds of experiences. This win was a true team effort, and it was incredible to see everyone’s hard work pay off. Big shoutout to the players, coaches, and families who made it all happen. Way to go, 2013 Boys— can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
